CANADA’S ALTERNATIVE 80s EXPERIENCE
Toronto’s UK Calling bring a unique take to the 80s tribute show. This is a tribute to an era, a vibe and a style. Just like Toronto’s old CFNY-FM, this show brings alternative hits from the late 70’s and 80’s, focusing on artists like The Clash, Tears for Fears, The Cure and The Specials, the repertoire covers the best from New Wave, Post-Punk and 2tone Ska from the era.
What separates this show from the rest is the energy brought to the performance. More than a pair of wayfarers and a cheesy synthesizer, this band digs in and works their hearts out to bring audiences a dynamic and animated show that keeps people dancing all night. UK Calling play the songs that nobody else does. Style Council, Joy Division, Madness – if you know who these are, you will love UK Calling. For those that are new to the genre, the engaging performance and the world-class tenor voice of entrancing frontman Peter James Fox, will pull you in and take you on a journey that will leave you saying ‘Wow!’
The band itself features some of Toronto’s finest musicians; players who have worked with artists such as The Julian Taylor Band, Arkells, Serena Ryder, Michael Buble, Bjorn Again, Johannes Linstead, Australia’s Dan Sultan, Melissa Ethridge and Idioteque to name but a few. The musicianship of this band stands out as they weave their way through hits with soaring harmonies, ripping solos and a horn section comprising of Canadian musical royalty. What’s more, this show is completely live! No backing tracks or hidden tricks, UK Calling are the real deal!
The idea started when Peter and bassist Jarrod Ross had an idea to form a British tribute band, but thought “what if we don’t play any Beatles or Led Zeppelin?”. “What if, instead, we played The Smiths or Joe Jackson?”. “What if we played a whole night of The Cure, or 2tone Ska?”. The show is as much about what the band doesn’t play as much as what they do play. This music is special to those who love it, and UK Calling are proud to take on the responsibility of keeping the torch alive and celebrating these iconic, alternative artists, with those who love them most – you!
UK Calling spent years playing clubs around the GTA, cutting their teeth and refining the show. The 10,000 hours spent onstage is evident when watching the show; tight arrangements, dramatic moments and the sheer fun shared between the audience and the band all come together to create a truly authentic and unique experience that simply blows the crowd away! 2024 has been a massive year for UK Calling as they have been selling out bigger and bigger venues with fans travelling far and wide to see them. This is a night that you will not forget as the band leave it all out there – every ounce of energy goes into creating the most engaging and energetic performances night after night.
