Retirement Notice

Craig Metcalf, GM of the FLATO Academy Theatre, has announced his retirement after more than five years at the helm of the historic performing arts institution.

The Academy Theatre Foundation’s Board of Directors would like to express their sincere gratitude to Craig for his exemplary service to the theatre and to the CoKL arts community.

Shortly after being hired, COVID-19 shuttered the theatre for the first two years of Craig’s tenure. He navigated closures, multiple reopenings, safety protocol, funding, operations and upkeep, staff, and an historic outdoor fundraising concert in a Herculean effort to keep the theatre afloat alongside the ATF Board. Through all of that and more, Craig has helped usher the theatre into a new era of growth—from a leanly programmed and indebted operation into a lively curated, incredibly busy, and financially healthy operation. He has been a vocal arts advocate in the community and he will be greatly missed.

In a parting message, Metcalf writes:

“I didn’t know anything about the Academy Theatre five years ago, but now I understand what a cherished institution it is in this city and beyond. I’m so grateful to have been part of this team and to have worked here. Due to health and other issues, it is time for me to retire. I would like to thank the Board for their support over the past few years and the privilege of working with them to set the Academy on the path to long term success. The work must continue.”

The Academy Theatre Foundation will be conducting a hiring search for a new General Manager. A job outline and application process will soon be posted publicly. Passionate and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

In the meantime, any correspondence can be directed to Michael Piggott, ATF Chair, via the theatre office at admin@academytheatre.ca .
